Sinds het begin van 2022 is er een toename van illegale migratie vanuit Tunesië naar Europa. De toename is het hoogste in Noord Afrika. Dit rapport van het Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (januari 2022) citeert een paar oorzaken:
“The reasons for this surge are complex, with no single factor responsible for the rise in departures. Rather, the decisions of Tunisian irregular migrants – who make up the overwhelming thrust behind these rising numbers – have been influenced by an interplay of economic and social factors.
