Kenya breekt met Polisario, opent ambassade in Rabat

De nieuwe president William S. Ruto van Kenya heeft op 14 september 2022 in een bericht op Twitter (nu X platform) aangekondigd dat zijn land de “Arabisch Democratisch Republiek van de Westelijke Sahara” (SADR) niet langer erkent als land. Hij wilde alle vertegenwoordigers van Polisario het land uit. 

@WilliamsRuto: “At State House in Nairobi, received congratulatory message from His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Kenya rescinds its recognition of the SADR and initiates steps to wind down the entity’s presence in the country. Kenya supports the United Nations framework as the exclusive mechanism to find a lasting solution of the dispute over Western Sahara. We are accelerating relations with the Kingdom of Morocco in areas of trade, agriculture, health, tourism, energy, among others, for the mutual benefit of our countries.”

Sindsdien werd het stil rond de kwestie tot deze week toen staatssecretaris Musalia Mudavadi heeft aangekondigd dat zijn land een ambassade in Rabat gaat openen en dat hij het autonomieplan voor de Sahara steunt. Het besluit van Kenya is een grote diplomatieke overwinning voor Marokko. Kenya is een van de laatste Afrikaanse landen die Polisario erkent. Het heeft gevolgen op het lidmaatschap van de separatisten binnen de Afrikaanse Unie. Kenya is een Engelstalig land van rond 40 miljoen inwoners en heeft groot invloed in Oost-Afrika.
