De meeste steden in Marokko liggen aan de Atlantische Ocean. Daar zit ook de meeste industrie. Industriële en huishoudelijk afval komen terecht in de zee. Dat veroorzaakt vervuiling van zeeweater. Er zijn de laatste tijd geregeld waarschuwingen om sommige schelpdieren in bepaalde plaatsen niet te eten omdat ze giftig kunnen zijn. De vervuiling is volgens het International Atomic Energy Agency een wereldwijd probleem. Daarom wordt elk jaar op 08 juni een Dag van de Oceaan georganiseerd: https://tinyurl.com/49mnjheu
De vervuiling is ook een bedreiging voor de zeewier. Deze waterplanten groeien op de rotsen aan de kust en zijn waardevol voor de medische wetenschap. Zes soorten zeewier uit Tifnit, een vissersdorp ten zuiden van Agadir, werden in 2021 onderzocht:
“Seaweeds are rich sources of natural bioactive products. Their interesting biological activities contributed to the investigation of natural therapeutic compounds used in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. In this study extracts of six seaweeds collected in Agadir region: Chondrus cripsus, Corallina officinalis, Fucus vesiculosus, Ulva lactuca, Cystoseira humulis, were studied for their antimicrobial activities, using the disk diffusion method against four pathogenic bacteria for humans: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus sp, Enterococcus cloacae, and two yeasts (Candida albicans , Cryptococcus neoformans). The results indicate that among the algae samples analysed, the extracts of Chondrus crispus, and Corallina officinalis as well as Fucus visiculosus showed the greatest potency against all the pathogens tested. So the local algae tested, can be considered as an interesting biological source of bioactive compounds and should be studied as natural antibiotics to control certain strains of pathogenic bacteria.”
